Hawaii is known for its Alaea sea salt, which has a reputation among gourmet, food-grade salt lovers as one of the best salts on earth. The rich reddish color comes from the iron oxide of purified Alaea clay which is added during processing. Alaea is composed of over 80 different minerals that contribute to good health.
Traditonally, Hawaiians have used Alaea sea salt in ceremonies to bless canoes and other sacred objects and also in their healing rituals and medicines.
This is the traditional salt used in native Hawaiian dishes. It's flavor is smooth and mellow. Mix the coarse salt with herbs and use as a roasting salt or grind fine and use as a table salt.
